India Clears ₹1.10 Lakh Crore Defence Procurement Push: What Army, Navy and Air Force Will Get

India has given in-principle approval to capital acquisition proposals valued at about ₹1.10 lakh crore, opening the way for a broad modernisation drive across the Army, Navy and Air Force.

The Defence Acquisition Council, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, granted Acceptance of Necessity on September 7. The Ministry of Defence said approximately 98% of the value covered by the approvals would be sourced from Indian industry—a major boost for domestic aerospace, electronics, military-vehicle and ship-propulsion programmes.

Accuracy note: Some reports have linked the package to Su-30MKI modernisation. However, the Ministry of Defence announcement does not name the Su-30MKI; it refers more broadly to proposals enhancing the war-fighting capability of fighters, transport aircraft and helicopters. A specific Su-30MKI inclusion should therefore not be treated as officially confirmed from this announcement alone.

Army: mobility, survivability and obstacle-crossing

The Army approvals are concentrated on battlefield movement and combat engineering. CBRN reconnaissance vehicles would allow formations to map contaminated ground, while high-mobility vehicles improve logistics in mountains, deserts and other difficult areas. Mechanical mine layers provide faster defensive minefield deployment.

Trawl tanks and Sarvatra bridges address the opposite challenge: opening routes for troops and armour. Together, these systems can help a formation breach mines, cross gaps and sustain momentum under operational conditions.

Navy: better air surveillance and a strategic propulsion bet

The Arudhra radars will replace older air-route surveillance radars at naval air stations. The system is associated with India’s indigenous radar ecosystem led by the Defence Research and Development Organisation and Bharat Electronics.

The marine gas-turbine decision is strategically significant. India currently depends heavily on overseas technology for high-performance warship propulsion. A successful domestic design could strengthen supply security, simplify long-term maintenance and preserve more control over upgrades for future naval platforms.

Air Force: electronic warfare and fleet capability

The Air Force portion includes unspecified enhancements for fighters, transports and helicopters. Ground-Based Multi-Purpose Jammers would add an important electronic-warfare layer by interfering with hostile radars, potentially reducing an adversary’s ability to detect, track or engage Indian assets.

Because the Ministry has not published platform names or technical configurations, claims about particular fighter upgrades or exact equipment fits should await subsequent tender, contract or service-level disclosures.

Why the 98% figure matters: If translated into signed contracts, the domestic share could channel roughly ₹1.08 lakh crore of the estimated package value toward Indian industry. That is an indicative calculation—not an announced contract split—and actual values can change during tendering and negotiation.

Approval is the starting point, not a purchase order

Acceptance of Necessity is the first major administrative clearance in India’s capital procurement process. It confirms the requirement and permits the services to advance the acquisition, but it does not mean the entire ₹1.10 lakh crore has already been spent or that contracts have been awarded.

The next stages can include requests for proposal, technical evaluation, field trials, commercial negotiations and final approvals. Vendor names, quantities, delivery schedules and final prices may emerge only as the individual cases move forward.

Why this package matters

The approvals span the less-visible systems that often decide whether frontline forces can move, survive and operate effectively: logistics vehicles, mine-warfare equipment, bridging, surveillance radar, electronic jamming and secure base access. The marine gas-turbine programme also targets one of the most difficult remaining areas of naval self-reliance.

For Indian manufacturers, the headline opportunity is substantial, but execution will be decisive. The real impact will depend on how quickly the AoNs become competitively priced contracts, how much critical technology is genuinely localised and whether equipment reaches operational units on schedule.
