Pakistan Set to Play Asian Champions Trophy 2026 in India; India vs Pakistan Clash on November 1

MOHALI: One of world hockey’s oldest and most emotionally charged rivalries is heading back to Indian soil. Pakistan has been listed among the six participating nations for the 2026 Men’s Asian Champions Trophy, which will be played in Punjab from October 27 to November 5.

India, Pakistan, Malaysia, China, Japan and South Korea are set to contest the continental tournament, while Bangladesh and Oman have been identified as reserve teams in case a participating side withdraws.

The league stage and opening ceremony are scheduled to be held at the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar, before the competition shifts to the Olympian Balbir Singh Senior International Hockey Stadium in Mohali for the semifinals and final.

India vs Pakistan Hockey Match Planned for November 1

The biggest match of the league stage is expected on November 1 in Jalandhar, when defending champions India face Pakistan.

The date carries additional significance because November 1 is celebrated as Punjab Day. The Punjab government has been planning the marquee India-Pakistan encounter around the occasion, potentially turning Jalandhar into the centre of Asian hockey for the day.

The exact match timing is yet to be formally finalised in the complete public fixture programme, but the November 1 date and Jalandhar venue have been repeatedly announced by the organisers and Punjab government.

Why Pakistan’s Visit Is Significant

Pakistan travelling to Punjab would be notable because the country’s hockey teams did not travel to India for major international tournaments in 2025 amid heightened political and security tensions between the two neighbours.

Pakistan withdrew from the 2025 Men’s Hockey Asia Cup in Rajgir, Bihar, despite the tournament being an important qualification event for the 2026 World Cup. Bangladesh eventually entered the competition as a replacement.

Pakistan also stayed away from the 2025 FIH Junior Men’s Hockey World Cup in India. At the time, questions over government clearance, security and strained bilateral relations had created uncertainty over whether Pakistani hockey teams could travel to India.

That makes the situation in 2026 markedly different.

What Changed Between 2025 and 2026?

In May 2026, India’s sports policy clarified an important distinction between bilateral sporting engagements with Pakistan and international or multilateral tournaments.

Under the policy, India and Pakistan continue to avoid bilateral sporting series hosted in each other’s countries. However, Pakistani athletes can participate in multilateral international competitions taking place in India, just as India can compete against Pakistan when both are part of a larger international event.

The Asian Champions Trophy falls into the second category because it is an Asian Hockey Federation tournament involving six national teams rather than a standalone India-Pakistan bilateral series.

Hockey India Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh has also said the relationship between the Indian and Pakistani hockey federations remains good, adding another layer of confidence that the Pakistan team will make the trip.

What Happened the Last Time Pakistan Played in India?

Pakistan’s senior men’s team last played the Asian Champions Trophy on Indian soil in Chennai in August 2023.

That meeting ended emphatically in India’s favour.

Harmanpreet Singh scored twice from penalty corners, while Jugraj Singh and Akashdeep Singh added a goal each. The result sent India to the top of the league table and eliminated Pakistan from semifinal contention.

India ultimately went on to win the 2023 Asian Champions Trophy before successfully defending the title in China a year later.

India Have Dominated the Recent Rivalry

Pakistan remains one of the most decorated nations in international hockey history, but recent senior men’s meetings have overwhelmingly favoured India.

The sequence gives India a clear psychological advantage, but hockey’s India-Pakistan rivalry has repeatedly shown that rankings and recent form can become secondary once the teams step onto the field.

India Enter as Two-Time Defending Champions

India will arrive in Punjab as the tournament’s most successful nation and the defending champion.

India won the competition in 2011 and 2016, shared the 2018 title with Pakistan after the final was abandoned because of heavy rain, and then captured consecutive crowns in 2023 and 2024.

The 2024 triumph in Hulunbuir, China, was India’s fifth Asian Champions Trophy title. India defeated hosts China 1-0 in the final, with Jugraj Singh scoring the decisive goal.

Pakistan has won three titles – in 2012, 2013 and jointly with India in 2018, while South Korea won the 2021 edition.

Why Jalandhar Is a Fitting Venue

Few regions are more closely associated with Indian hockey than Punjab. The state has produced generations of Olympians and international players, including several members of India’s modern national teams.

Hosting an India-Pakistan hockey match in Jalandhar therefore carries sporting as well as cultural significance. Punjab’s shared hockey heritage extends across both sides of the international border, and encounters between India and Pakistan have historically drawn enormous interest in the region.

The tournament will also mark a major international hockey event for Punjab, with the opening and league matches in Jalandhar before the championship reaches its climax in Mohali.

Could Pakistan Still Withdraw?

Until a team physically arrives in the host country, international sporting participation can never be described as absolutely guaranteed — particularly when India and Pakistan are involved.

However, the situation is considerably clearer than it was ahead of the 2025 tournaments.

Pakistan is currently included in the six-team field, Punjab’s chief minister has publicly said that its participation has been confirmed, Hockey India officials are preparing for the tournament, and India’s current sports policy provides a route for Pakistani teams to participate in multilateral international events.

The presence of Bangladesh and Oman as reserve teams provides organisers with contingency options if any participant withdraws, but there is currently no announcement that Pakistan intends to pull out.
