The mayor of Arcadia city in California, Eileen Wang, has resigned after US federal authorities charged her with allegedly acting as an illegal agent for the Chinese government. The case has triggered fresh debate in the United States over foreign influence operations and political infiltration at the local government level.
According to the US Department of Justice, Wang agreed to plead guilty to one felony count linked to secretly promoting Chinese government interests between 2020 and 2022. Prosecutors said she worked alongside Yaoning “Mike” Sun, who had earlier been sentenced in a related case involving Chinese influence activities.
Authorities alleged that Wang and Sun operated a Chinese-language platform called “US News Center”, which reportedly published pro-Beijing propaganda targeted at Chinese-American communities in Southern California. Federal investigators claimed some of the articles denied allegations of human rights abuses in Xinjiang and were posted under the direction of Chinese officials.
Resignation After Federal Charges
Arcadia officials confirmed Wang stepped down from office immediately after the federal case became public. The city administration stated that no municipal funds or official city operations were linked to the alleged activities.
The Justice Department said Wang could face up to 10 years in federal prison if convicted under the plea agreement. FBI officials described the case as part of broader efforts to counter covert foreign influence campaigns within US political institutions.
Growing US-China Tensions
The case comes amid increasing tensions between Washington and Beijing over espionage, technology theft, influence operations and national security concerns. US agencies have repeatedly warned about attempts by foreign governments to influence local politics, diaspora communities and public opinion inside America.
Federal prosecutors alleged that Wang maintained communication with individuals previously convicted in separate China-related influence investigations. Officials claimed the activities occurred before she officially entered public office in Arcadia.
