An Indian captain, passengers and fellow crew members helped avert a potential disaster after a co-pilot allegedly stabbed the captain aboard a flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30. Israeli officials said the attacker apparently tried to crash the aircraft before it was brought under control and landed in Saudi Arabia.

A cockpit confrontation and a sudden descent

The emergency unfolded aboard flight FZ1073. Israeli officials alleged that the co-pilot attacked the captain and attempted to interfere with the aircraft’s operation. Passengers described a sudden plunge followed by confusion near the cockpit as people moved forward to help.

Flight-tracking data showed a dramatic loss of altitude of around 14,000 feet in roughly 30 seconds. The aircraft subsequently diverted to Tabuk. The exact sequence inside the cockpit remains subject to investigation.

Captain Smit Machchhar’s crucial intervention

Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian citizen, was injured during the confrontation. According to the Israeli prime minister’s office, he managed to release the cockpit door despite his wounds, enabling passengers and crew to reach the flight deck.

His actions created a vital opportunity to overpower the alleged attacker. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the captain’s courage, while Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also commended him.

Passengers stepped in; a dentist helped the wounded pilot

Passenger Yaniv Hayoun, identified by Netanyahu as a plumber, was among those who confronted the attacker. Dentist Shota Musayev also assisted and later attended to the injured captain. Their accounts describe an urgent effort to restrain the suspect and help the wounded pilot.

Additional flydubai pilots travelling aboard the aircraft helped regain control and bring it safely to the ground. The rescue depended on several people acting during the same emergency: the injured captain, passengers who intervened, and the crew who secured the flight.

Safe landing in Saudi Arabia

The aircraft landed at Tabuk, where Saudi authorities detained the suspected attacker. An Israeli official identified him as an Omani national. Passengers received assistance after the diversion.

The safe landing prevented the emergency from becoming a fatal crash. However, the allegations about deliberately bringing down the aircraft remain part of the inquiry rather than a final investigative finding.

What Netanyahu, Modi and other leaders said

Benjamin Netanyahu: A salute to the Indian captain

“My salute to the Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar for his extraordinary bravery.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Machchhar resisted despite being seriously injured and opened the cockpit door, allowing others to overpower the attacker. He credited the captain with helping save 174 people, including Israelis and other nationals, and called him a true hero.

Narendra Modi: India is proud

“Captain Smit Machchhar is a HERO.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the captain’s courage and determination to protect others in extreme danger. He said Machchhar’s bravery helped avert a great tragedy, expressed India’s pride in him and wished him a speedy recovery, renewed strength and good health.

Donald Trump: Opening the door was a heroic act

US President Donald Trump said he had discussed the incident with Netanyahu. He praised the injured pilot for opening the cockpit door so help could reach him and commended the passenger intervention. Trump also acknowledged that he was recounting information given to him, rather than independently verified details.

Droupadi Murmu: Courage and presence of mind

President Droupadi Murmu expressed the nation’s pride in Machchhar. She praised his courage, quick response and resolve to protect others despite his injuries.

Rajnath Singh: An inspiration for others

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also commended the captain’s bravery, saying the country stood with him and that his courage would inspire future generations.

What remains under investigation

Israeli officials have raised the possibility of an attempted terrorist attack. Flydubai, however, said the underlying reasons were still unknown and cautioned against speculation.

Determining what triggered the confrontation, how the aircraft’s controls were affected and the suspect’s intent will be central to establishing a complete account. Until those findings emerge, the motive should not be treated as proven.

This is a developing story. Allegations about the attacker’s intent and motive remain under investigation.
