In a shocking incident that has intensified political tensions in West Bengal, Chandranath Rath, a close aide and personal assistant of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari was shot dead near Kolkata late Wednesday night.
The attack reportedly took place in Madhyamgram in North 24 Parganas district, close to Kolkata airport, just days after the high-voltage 2026 West Bengal Assembly election results. According to reports, unidentified bike-borne attackers opened fire on Rath’s vehicle at close range.
Another associate travelling with him, identified as Buddhadeb Bera, was seriously injured in the attack and shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
What Happened?
Sources say the attackers followed Rath’s car before opening fire when the vehicle slowed down in a narrow lane. Multiple bullets were fired, with reports suggesting Rath suffered fatal gunshot wounds to the head and chest.
Police teams later reached the spot and launched an investigation. CCTV footage from nearby areas is reportedly being scanned, though no arrests had been confirmed at the time of reporting.
Suvendu Adhikari Calls It a “Pre-Planned Murder”
Reacting strongly to the killing, Suvendu Adhikari described the incident as a “heart-wrenching” and “pre-planned murder.” He alleged that Rath had been under surveillance for days before the attack.
The BJP leader also appealed to supporters not to take the law into their own hands amid rising tensions in the state.
Adhikari’s brother Dibyendu Adhikari demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the killing.
Political Storm in Bengal
The murder has triggered a major political storm in Bengal, with BJP leaders accusing the ruling establishment of failing to maintain law and order.
Interestingly, leaders from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) also condemned the incident and demanded strict action against those responsible. Some reports indicate that TMC leaders supported calls for an impartial investigation.
The incident comes amid an already tense political atmosphere following the 2026 Assembly elections, where the BJP made major electoral gains in the state.

Chandranath Rath was considered one of Suvendu Adhikari’s most trusted aides and had become a key figure in his political operations over recent years. Some reports describe him as a former Indian Air Force personnel before entering political work.
