Travelling between Bengaluru and Mumbai could soon become significantly faster and more comfortable.
Indian Railways is reportedly preparing to launch a new superfast train service on the high-demand Bengaluru–Mumbai corridor by June 2026, while a premium Vande Bharat Sleeper service is expected to follow in the next phase.

The move is being seen as a major connectivity boost for business travellers, IT professionals, students and frequent passengers travelling between India’s financial and technology capitals.
Faster Journey Planned
At present, most trains between Bengaluru and Mumbai take around 18 to 24 hours depending on the service and route congestion.
The proposed superfast service is expected to reduce travel time considerably, while the future Vande Bharat Sleeper could bring the journey closer to nearly 13 hours once operational.
Railway officials are yet to announce the final schedule, stoppages and fare structure.
Why The Route Is Important
The Bengaluru–Mumbai corridor is among India’s busiest intercity travel sectors due to strong demand from:
- IT and startup professionals
- Corporate travellers
- Manufacturing and business sectors
- Students and migrant workforce
- Tourism and family travel
With airfares frequently rising during peak periods, Railways sees strong potential for a faster premium overnight train service.
Vande Bharat Sleeper Expected In Next Phase

The upcoming Vande Bharat Sleeper trains are designed for long-distance overnight travel and are expected to feature:
- Fully air-conditioned sleeper coaches
- Modern aircraft-style interiors
- Automatic doors
- Bio-vacuum toilets
- Passenger infotainment systems
- Advanced safety systems including Kavach technology
- Improved ride stability at higher speeds
The sleeper variant is part of Indian Railways’ larger modernization push aimed at replacing older long-distance rolling stock with semi-high-speed trainsets.
Bigger Railway Modernisation Push
The Bengaluru–Mumbai plan also reflects Indian Railways’ broader focus on upgrading high-demand economic corridors with:
- Faster trains
- Better onboard comfort
- Reduced travel time
- Improved punctuality
- Modern passenger amenities
Track upgrades and signaling improvements on several major routes are already underway to support future high-speed and semi-high-speed operations.
What It Means For Passengers
If the project moves ahead on schedule, travellers could soon get:
âś… Faster overnight connectivity
âś… More comfortable long-distance travel
âś… Premium train experience at lower cost than flights
âś… Better reliability and reduced waiting lists
An official confirmation and detailed timetable from Indian Railways is expected in the coming weeks.
